Portfolio Review Day: Meet The Reviewers

Next Saturday designers from across the state are traveling to the Richland Library in Columbia, SC for Portfolio Review Day. Meet 17 of South Carolina’s top designers who are volunteering their time to help the next generation become great.

 


 

Alex Six

Full-Stack Developer at Fivable
Alex is a full-stack developer at Fivable and the head of the Youth Evangelization Production Team for the Diocese of Charleston. He loves clean code, functionally simple design, and powerful, passionate videos. Alex has been a full-stack developer for 4 years, and has spoken at events such as TEDx Youth Columbia and the Clemson Hackathon CUHackIt.

 

Daniel Machado

Design Lead at True Matter
Daniel Machado is a designer, illustrator, musician and filmmaker from Columbia, South Carolina. His design and illustration work has appeared in Type Rules! The Designers Guide to Professional Typography (Wiley; 4 edition, 2013) and has received awards from the SC AIGA InShow and the American Advertising Federation of the Midlands ADDY Awards. Machado’s work with The Restoration, a band focused on concept albums about the American South, was featured in Paste Magazine and Classicalite, and has been taught at Spartanburg Methodist College in a combined history and literature curriculum since 2010. The Restoration was selected to open for Shovels & Rope on the main stage at the SC State Fair in 2014. Machado’s short film, Honor the Father, appeared at the 2014 Indie Grits Film Festival, receiving the award for best “Local Grit.” He served as a producer and composer on Our Star Trek: The 50 Year Mission, a short documentary featured at Dragon Con 2015.

Dan Marino

Creative Director at Krumware
Dan Marino is the Creative Director at Krumware, a software design and development studio specializing in building web applications and progressive web applications for enterprise clients. Dan has worked in various capacities from in-house print and web design in the snowboard industry, to rebranding and designing eCommerce platforms for the athletics industry, to working at agencies to product manage and designing interfaces on native (iOS, Android) and web/progressive web applications. Dan has a strong emphasis on the importance of design thinking/process and conceptual thought, while also focusing on the fine details of a product’s pixel-precise execution. In his spare time Dan enjoys backcountry snowboarding, DIY renovating his house or cars, and hiking with his fiancée and golden retriever, Indy.

 

Eva Foussat

Creative Director for South Carolina Hospital Association
Eva Foussat is an award-winning Creative Director with more than ten years experience in healthcare communications. Her experience in healthcare includes experience at both the local level with five years at Lexington Medical Center and at the state level with eight years of experience that the South Carolina Hospital Association. She is skilled in Adobe Creative Suite and also has extensive experience with oversight of social media strategy, project management, concept brainstorming and website CMS. Her education background includes Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Journalism & Mass Communications from University of South Carolina with a focus on Visual Communications and Graphic Design.

 

George Fulton

Owner/Photographer, George Fulton Productions
George is a nationally recognized advertising photographer for international brands such as Coors Light, ASICS running shoes, Mastercard, John Hancock, Pepsi-Cola, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Syngenta, SCANA, Palmetto Health and many more. George specializes in creative lifestyle photography for brands of all sizes, for print, outdoor, magazine and web. George also specializes in healthcare photography. Beginning as a writer, George traded keyboard for camera, but his photographs still grow from stories and are the immediate offspring of the big idea. North, South, East and West, George is called upon to help produce original visual messages that tell the unique story of great brands, both large and small.

 

Heather Price

Creative Director, Chernoff Newman
Through strategic and creative direction, Heather helps to create and maintain brands for some of the agency’s most high-profile clients including the SC Department of Agriculture, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College. No matter what client she’s working on, Heather
has her finger on the pulse of what’s next but still stays grounded in the tried and true forms of communication. And no matter where the agency’s ideas air, she will always relish the moment that an idea moves from concept to reality. Her work has earned numerous local, regional and national awards.

 

Josh Capeder

Owner/Designer,  Josh Capeder Design Co
Josh Capeder is a creative director running a small graphic design studio in Charleston, SC. His team offers brand identity, graphic design, marketing and web design. Josh understands the importance of crafting a sound and consistent brand to display a product. In his spare time, Josh loves hiking and practicing yoga with his black lab, Lola.

 

Kathryn Van Aernum

Owner/Designer & Photographer
Kathryn Van Aernum holds a BA in Visual Arts from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. She has worked as a graphic designer for over 25 years on both the agency and client side of the business. Her work has been recognized through Addy, Marcom, and Aster (Healthcare) awards and has been published in PRINT Magazine’s Regional Design Annual and PRINT’S Best Logos and Symbols. Ms. Van Aernum is also a passionate participant in the Columbia art community as a photorapher and teacher, and coaches professionals who have buried their creative soul in the daily grind. She guides them so they can thrive at work and beyond.

 

Kody Kratzer

Graphic Designer PwC
Kody is a graphic designer and SC native who worked in several in-house advertising roles before joining PwC to help start a new design department. Her interests in illustration, story and strategy often inform her work to create compelling solutions for clients.

 

Michelle Couch

Multimedia Design Specialist at Sonoco
Michelle is an experienced design specialist with a demonstrated history of working in the packaging and containers industry. Strong media and communication professional skilled in magazine design, graphics, logo design, typography, video editing, front-end web work and adobe creative suite.

 

 

Nathan Puza

Graphic Designer, The Half and Half
Nate is the boomerang kid of the shop – working here first as an intern, then later as a pressman, leaving just to come back to work here again as a designer. His specialties include illustration, lettering, printmaking, art creating, leaf raking, bike riding, cat petting, hat wearing, writing in the 3rd person, and a killer chicken parmesan.

 

Shannon Livengood

Graphic Designer at Richland Library
Shannon graduated magna cum laude with a BA, concentration on Graphic Design, from the University of South Carolina. She landed her dream job one year later at Richland Library. Being a voracious reader and a huge community supporter, working for the library fulfills her every need. She is also in charge of our intern program and has worked with many student designers from USC and Columbia College. 10 years later, she is still loving her work and her library.

 

Ryon Edwards

Partner/Design Director at Riggs Partners
Design is an integral part of every RP strategy, and Ryon is its czar. Ryon’s vast knowledge of design, attention to detail, and obsessive love of brand identity design and typography have set the aesthetic standard at Riggs Partners since 1996. His work has earned numerous Gold and Best in Show awards from AIGA SC and AAF of the Midlands. His work has been recognized in Communication Arts, Print, How, LogoLounge and FPO. Ryon has volunteered his design talents to nonprofits like The March of Dimes, Harvest Hope Food Bank, EdVenture Children’s Museum, Friends of Harbison State Forest and AIGA SC.

 

Savannah Taylor

Graphic Designer at Nickelodeon TheatreIndie Grits Labs
Savannah Taylor is a graphic designer based out of Columbia, SC. She is the in-house designer for Columbia Film Society, where she manages and executes design projects for both the Nickelodeon Theatre and Indie Grits Labs. She has created three design campaigns for Indie Grits Festival, and is in charge of the Nickelodeon Theatre’s quarterly publication, the Nick Mag. In her spare time, Savannah freelances and helps out over at the PrintLab— Indie Grits Labs’ artist-led zine and printing press.

 

Tim Floyd

Owner/Designer, Tim Floyd Creative
Tim is one part artist, one part designer, two parts entrepreneur, three parts creative, mixed with a bit of hunger for travel and lake life. After spending the past 25 years as the creative director at Palmetto Health, Tim just struck out on his own. His new company, Tim Floyd Creative, is helping companies with clear messaging and design. He enjoys problem-solving for companies that want to think differently and he seeks to provide creative solutions. As part of his new venture, he is a certified StoryBrand Guide. His life theme is to Embrace Life. The good, the bad and the in-between.

 

Todd Turner

Creative Director, Adams Outdoor Advertising
Out of home advertising runs in Todd Turner’s veins. He began his career with Adams Outdoor Advertising in 2004, starting as a junior designer and eventually becoming Adams’ Creative Director. When Adams partnered with Fairway Outdoor in 2015, he assumed the role of National Creative Director for Adams+Fairway. Over the years, Todd has created a plethora of award-winning out of home campaigns for clients small and large, including McDonald’s, Bojangles’, Kwik Trip, and Sonic. Under Todd’s leadership, Adams+Fairway has taken home numerous National ADDY and OBIE Awards. Todd continues to lead the Adams+Fairway creative teams to greater heights, cheers on the Chicago Cubs, and dreams of one day owning a fully restored 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

 

Tony Samuels

Senior UX Designer, Unum / Colonial Life
Tony Samuels is a Charleston, South Carolina native and graduate from Benedict College. He has been in the design industry for approximately 17 years and has experience in everything from print to web.
